How to Protect Your Pool from Storms

Anyone living in Pensacola, FL; Milton, FL; or the surrounding areas needs to be prepared for torrential rain, hurricanes, or tropical storms. If you have a pool, you should have a plan in place to protect that investment from storms. Also make sure to put your plan in place at least one day before the inclement weather is supposed to affect your area. Here are some helpful tips to keep in mind that can help you create or improve your storm preparation plans:

  • Move all patio furniture away from the pool and into a secure area. You can also tie the furniture down while taking care to make sure glass tops have extra protection.
  • You should backwash and rinse out the pool filter.
  • Make sure there is a lot of chlorine in the pool to prevent algae growth. Pool circulation may not be possible if your power company turns electricity off before the storm arrives. They may do this to avoid downed power lines from harming anyone who is still outside. The power could stay off for days or weeks.
  • Your pool will be alright if it overflows during the storm; it’s not worth it to try to fix an overflowing pool during a storm if you haven’t already taken precautions.
  • You can remove about 6” of water before the storm arrives. However, the pool may overflow again. In this case, you can change the filter to the “Waste Cycle” in the multiport valve and take your discharge hose out. Make sure you’re doing this without power to the pump. This technique may allow you to gradually remove water from the pool. When the storm is over, move the valve back to the “Filter Cycle.”
  • Turn off any timer trippers on your pumps or any automatic equipment. You will stay in charge of power when the equipment is running.
  • Put all pool toys in a safe place.
  • Be aware that a storm may cause your pool to turn green, fences to fall down, and trees to fall into the pool.
