Having properly balanced pool water is very important. You should be aware of five important elements of pool water balance:
● Chlorine disinfects and sanitizes.
● pH levels affect your comfort and the efficiency of the chlorine.
● Alkalinity buffers the pH.
● Calcium hardness lessens the formation of scales.
● Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) should be removed when needed.
You can get a comprehensive pool maintenance book from Emerald Coast Fiberglass Pools.
There are many different reasons a pool might turn green. However, the most common reason is an incorrect level of chlorine. It’s for this reason that you should check the water’s chlorine levels first. Even if the reading shows a normal level of chlorine, you’ll need to add a lot of chlorine to get rid of the algae in the water.
Another common problem is a lack of circulation or filter run time. We recommend running your pump and filter system nonstop for several days in addition to adding extra chlorine. Before you do that, though, you should check your skimmer and pump trap buckets for any obstructions or debris. Even a small amount of debris – such as grass clippings – can lead to poor pool circulation. You can also scrub the walls if algae is present.
If you or your children have red eyes after spending time in the pool, you should check the water’s pH and alkalinity. The proper alkalinity is 120ppm for a vinyl liner pool and 150ppm for a concrete pool. The proper pH is 7.4 to 7.6. The pH levels are likely to return to normal after the addition of an alkalinity increaser, also known as sodium bicarbonate.
Eye irritation can also be caused by the presence of chloramines in the pool water. Chloramines are formed when the chlorine in the pool bonds to the ammonia in urine or perspiration. Chloramines, or combined chlorine, smells like ammonia – which can sometimes be mistaken for the smell of high chlorine levels. You should add chlorine as instructed on the product’s label to reach break-point chlorination. Getting to the correct chlorine level will get rid of the chloramines, ammonia smell, and irritation.
You may want to look out for signs that pool water is leaking out of the light niche. This is especially important because you may not notice standing water around the pool unless the plumbing line is near the ground. You should make sure that the water level of the pool never goes below your area’s water table. If you notice any signs of leaking or the water level decreasing, get in touch with our professionals as soon as possible.
We recommend using a product called Pool Stain Treat®. It’s easy to use and highly effective. You simply sprinkle the product on the water over the stairs you want to clean; it will settle onto the stairs and make them look like new again! Be sure to turn off the pool pump before applying the product.
After installation, our team offers free pool school sessions which help educate new pool owners on everything they will need to know about their new pool. We will go over operating equipment, testing the water, and everything else you need to know to keep your pool in top condition.
